Cathepsin B 是一种半胱氨酸蛋白酶，参与多种程序性细胞死亡 (包括细胞凋亡、焦亡、铁亡、坏死亡和自噬性细胞死亡)。组织蛋白酶B已被发现可切割胱天蛋白酶原1和胱天蛋白酶原11，并在洋地黄皂苷透化细胞中诱导细胞凋亡。组织蛋白酶B从细胞质向细胞核的转移促进了胆盐诱导的大鼠肝细胞凋亡。在诱导细胞凋亡后12至24小时，PC12细胞中组织蛋白酶B的水平显著降低。
