生物活性：催乳素(PRL)是一种垂体分泌神经内分泌激素，主要作用于乳腺，促进泌乳，但对男性和女性都有多效作用。非糖基化催乳素由垂体产生，分泌前被包装成储存颗粒，而糖基化催乳素被报道为结构性分泌，生物效价较低，从循环中去除更快。催乳素主要由所有哺乳动物的垂体前叶合成，其分泌受到下丘脑多巴胺的强直抑制。对人类来说，催乳素也是由外周产生的。催乳素受体(PRLR)是一种跨膜I型糖蛋白，属于细胞因子造血受体家族。催乳素分子被认为结合了两个受体分子。外周分泌的催乳素除了具有泌乳活性外，还在乳腺癌和前列腺癌的发生、生殖功能调节和免疫调节等方面发挥着重要作用。
