重组人NANS 是一种含有一个AFP类结构域的酶。NANS无处不在，并在西亚尔酸的生物合成途径中起作用。重组人NANS 由大肠杆菌表达系统生产，编码Met1-Ser359的目标基因在N端有一个6His标签。NANS产生N-乙酰神经氨酸（Neu5Ac）和2-酮-3-脱氧-D-甘油-D-半乳糖-壬酸（KDN）。它还可以使用6-磷酸N-乙酰氨基葡萄糖和6-磷酸甘露糖作为底物，分别生成磷酸化形式的Neu5Ac和KDN。
