促红细胞生成素(EPO)是肾脏在细胞缺氧时分泌的一种糖蛋白细胞因子，主要以其在促红细胞生成中的作用而闻名，它负责刺激红系祖细胞的增殖和分化。

促红细胞生成素(EPO)是肾脏在细胞缺氧时分泌的一种糖蛋白细胞因子，它负责刺激红系祖细胞的增殖和分化。只有在EPO存在的情况下，CFU-E细胞才能分化为红细胞。成年哺乳动物体内EPO的生理水平主要由肾脏维持，而胎儿或新生哺乳动物的EPO水平则由肝脏维持。EPO还能发挥多种非造血活性，包括血管化和平滑肌增殖，缺氧时的神经保护等。
DNA序列编码人EPO（NP_000790.2）表达带有His标签在C末端。
重组人EPO蛋白包含172个氨基酸，预测分子量为19.2kD。
通过用TF-1细胞进行细胞增殖测定，测得的ED50值为≤5 ng/mL。
