Amphiregulin (AREG) is a single-pass membrane protein related to Epidermal Growth Factor (EGF) and Transforming Growth Factor Alpha. AREG interacts with the EGF/TGF-alpha receptor to promote the growth of normal epithelial cells and inhibits the growth of certain aggressive carcinoma cell lines.

Measured in a cell proliferation assay using Balb/3T3 mouse embryonic fibroblast cells, the ED50 for this effect < 14.5 ng/mL.
