TNF-α是由脂肪细胞、活化的单核细胞、巨噬细胞、B 细胞、T 细胞和成纤维细胞等多种细胞分泌的多效性促炎细胞因子。TNF-α对多种肿瘤细胞具有细胞毒性，是介导细菌感染免疫应答的重要因子。TNF-α在感染性休克、自身免疫性疾病、类风湿性关节炎、炎症和糖尿病的诱导中也发挥作用。

通过使用L-929小鼠纤维肉瘤细胞的细胞毒性试验中测得的ED50为 <0.05 ng/ml，对应的比活力为 >2.0 × 10⁷ units/mg。
