白介素 1 (IL-1)是一种多肽，分子质量为17 kd，有IL-1α及IL-1β两种亚型。IL-1ɑ由159个氨基酸组成。IL-1 受体（IL-1R）几乎存在于所有有核细胞表面，每个细胞的 IL-1R 数目不等，少则几十个（如 t 细胞），多则数千个（如成纤维细胞）。IL-1R 主要有两种类型：一种为 IL-1r1，其分子伸入胞浆内的肽链部分较长，起着传递活化信号的作用；另一种为 IL-1R2，胞内部分的肽段较短不能有效地传递信号，而是将胞外部分的肽链释放到细胞外液中，以游离形式与 IL-1 结合，发挥反馈抑制作用。GM-CSF、G-CSF及 IL-1 自身均可提高细胞 IL-1R 的表达水平，而 TGF 及皮质类固醇能降低 IL-1R 的表达。
通过其诱导人自然杀伤性淋巴瘤 NK-92 细胞分泌干扰素γ 的能力测定，该效应的ED50为 ≤100 ng/mL。
